Launched in 2024, Fruits by the Fish started with one fired biologist, a thermal label printer, and a deep resentment for the stripping of DEI from STEM. Now it’s a queer, disabled, science-core operation slinging stickers that blend field data with field rage. If you’ve ever cried in waders, argued with a land manager, or lovingly cursed a fish, you’re in the right place.

Who we are?? (& why we’re like this)

Our agenda (and yes, it's gay)

Fruits by the Fish is a queer-led, science-rooted art project committed to making knowledge, resistance, and joy radically accessible. We create low-cost, high-impact visual work—stickers, prints, and merch—that blend scientific accuracy with political irreverence, all in service of community care and collective liberation.

Grounded in lived experience and a deep understanding of environmental systems, our mission is to uplift those pushed to the margins—displaced field techs, disabled scientists, trans naturalists, and every biologist who’s ever been underpaid and over-muddied. We believe in the power of small things: weird fish, loud labels, and messages that stick. Always anti-fascist, always Leave No Trace.

The Menace Behind it all

MJ Oubre (they/them) is a trans-non-binary, queer, disabled artist who turned a tough exit from fieldwork into a creative groundswell of mutual support and resistance. After being pushed out of fisheries fieldwork due to health concerns, MJ channeled their sharp eye, dry humor, and lived experience into art that uplifts, agitates, and builds community. Their work blends science-core weirdness with queer rage and field gear aesthetics—centering care, critique, and the creatures capitalism forgets. If they aren’t behind a keyboard causing good trouble, then they are likely on a river bank searching for treasures (fossils).
